Falling From Above

Falling From Above

The apple blossoms are falling from the apple trees.

The ground underneath the apple trees is carpeted with white petals, and whenever a breeze blows white petals float down like snowflakes.   It brought to mind a poem I wrote back in 2012, when our family was living on the East Coast.   I thought I would share it for today’s blog post.

Falling From Above

I’d never paid attention
to things falling from on high,
for only a chilly drizzle
ever fell from my sky.

And maybe a few pinecones;
random branches blown from trees;
May’s “blizzard” of cottonwood-fluff
floating on the breeze.

Moving to the East Coast,
where seasons come and go,
I discovered very quickly
to “Look out below.”

Items falling from above
in every shape and size,
announced the changing seasons,
and sometimes took me by surprise.

I arrived in November –
to vibrant yellow everywhere! …
as gusts of swirling leaves
went dancing through the air!

All too soon the show was ended,
leaving only barren trees.
Icy flakes of whiteness
came wafting on the breeze.

Winter’s snow, soft and gentle,
floated down without a sound,
blanketing all in silent stillness,
until springtime came around!

Catkins full of pollen
fell with the warming days,
piling up on our windshields
and needing to be cleared away.

Our cars were thickly layered
by all the pollen dust!
Carrying Windex along with me,
became an absolute must.

Remnants of dogwood blossoms,
in April floated down,
along with falling “bombs,”
which were hickory nuts, I found.

A time or two I got a scare
when ants fell on my neck.
I learned to be observant
whenever sitting on the deck.

Summer thunderstorms brought down
sheets of falling rain!
Dropping acorns let us know
it’s Autumn-time again!

And so the cycle continues
as the seasons come and go,
of things falling from above,
and surprising us below.

These signposts of the seasons
are special, for they show
God’s care over the earth,
and everything that grows.

“As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest will not cease.”
Summer, winter, cold and heat …
God has promised all of these.   (Genesis 8:22)

So I praise my wonderful God
for things falling from above …
daily little reminders
of His promise and His love.
