My daughter recently gave me a pair of pineapple socks. I was delighted!
Yesterday, as I was delighting over my pineapple socks, the verse suddenly popped into my head: “How beautiful … are the feet of those who bring good news.” – Isaiah 52:7
I was suddenly struck with the thought that this right here is what that verse looks like. This is what “feet which bring the good news of the gospel” look like.
Obviously, these socks are not pompous, proud, stodgy socks. Rather, these socks are joyful. These socks invite conversation. These socks say that the person who is wearing them doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
It reminds me of the very first time I met my daughter’s specialist doctor. He is a very positive, jovial, outgoing, high-energy person. He is witty, funny, and absolutely brilliant! He is a leader in his field of medicine and one of the top specialists in the area. But when he came in, that very first time I met him, he was wearing red-hot chili-pepper socks. The socks were dark navy with red hot chili peppers all over them.
The socks said it all. The socks said everything about who he was.
He is high-energy, borderline ADHD … and red-hot chili-pepper socks say just that! He is lighthearted, jovial, and doesn’t take himself too seriously … and red-hot chili-pepper socks say just that.
Even though he didn’t take himself too seriously this did not in any way diminish his brilliance. In his red-hot chili-pepper socks he spoke brilliant wisdom to my daughter concerning health matters.
Both my daughter and I learned a lot during that initial consultation, and I think one of the reasons it was such an enjoyable consult was, in part, due to the red-hot chili-pepper socks.
This right here is what “beautiful feet” which bring the good news of the gospel of Jesus are like. They are the feet of someone who is joyful. They are the feet of someone who has an important message to share which will radically transform another person’s life.
They are the feet of someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously. There’s no pride or pompous stuffiness. As a result, being around these people is both fun and enjoyable (just like our visit with red-hot chili-pepper-socks doctor was very enjoyable).
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? … ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’” – Romans 10:13-15
Let’s all strive to have “beautiful feet!”
