What is your life?  It is but a raspberry vine …

What is your life?  It is but a raspberry vine …

The temperatures climbed up into the 90’s this week.   Hubby and I do not have a soaker hose in the berry garden, so in the coolness of the early morning I carried several watering cans over to water the raspberries and strawberries.

As I stepped into the berry garden, I was taken aback by all the shriveled dried-up stems where the raspberries once were.

The raspberry harvest is over.

This is such a vivid picture of life.

The verse comes to mind:  “What is your life?  It is but a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”  – James 4:14

Or I guess we could say:  “What is your life?  It is but a raspberry vine that produces an abundant harvest for a brief time, then shrivels away … dies back … is cut off … and is found no more.”

This right here is our life.

We each are like the raspberry vines.   We have been given this beautiful gift of life.   We have been given this chance to live.   Today  …  right now.

But this gift of life is only for a brief time.   And when it is gone  …  it is over.

What are we doing with this life we have been given??

What are we doing with these days we have been given?

Is our life producing an abundant “harvest” of goodness during this brief time that is ours??

Or is our life simply being wasted away??

As I was watering the raspberries, I was fascinated to see the new young raspberry canes springing up at the base with fresh life and vitality!

All the growth of raspberry vines up above, from this season, will die off and be cut back this winter.   And a new generation of raspberry vines will grow up to have their chance in the next season.

This is life.

“What is your life?  It is but a raspberry vine that produces an abundant harvest for a brief time, then shrivels away … dies back … is cut off … and is found no more.”

What are you doing with the time you have been given?
