Be still … and know that I am God.

Be still … and know that I am God.

The sun shines in my back windows  …  bringing life to my little containers of sprouts.   It does not make any noise.   There is no sound.   It is very “still.”   Yet life and growth is occurring!

The little sprouts in the containers respond to the sunshine!   They grow!   They do not make any noise.   There is no sound.   All is quiet and “still.”   And yet, life and growth is occurring!

This is how spiritual growth occurs.   We do not have to try really really hard to grow in holiness.   We do not have to try really really hard to grow in forgiveness.   We do not have to strain and work and try really hard to grow in patience.

Like the little sprouts next to my windows, we simply respond to the Son – Jesus Christ.   We turn towards the Son.   We let the “sun” (Jesus) bring life and growth to our life.   We let our “roots” go down deep into the “soil” of the Word of God.   We “drink” in the “water” of the Word of God.   And in being “still” we allow the “sun” (Jesus) to change and transform us.

It is not possible to literally see the growth occurring in my little sprouts.   (I know with a high-speed camera it’s possible).   But as I stand there next to them, in real life the change and the growth is not perceptible.   It’s only noticeable over several days.

So also, when it comes to our spiritual growth, it’s not possible to literally see the spiritual transformation and change occurring in our lives.   We might not feel like we are growing in holiness because we can’t literally see it.   We might not feel like we are growing in patience or growing in forgiveness.

But as those in our life are around us over the course of time, the growth is unmistakable.   There is indeed growth happening!

Be still  …  and know that I am God.”    – Psalm 46:10
